Ferralium ®, as we’ve previously discussed, is a specific grade of super duplex stainless steel. It was first developed by Langley Alloys in the 1960s, following a considerable amount of research and development. Ferralium achieves strengths higher than most other kinds of stainless steels and alternative corrosion-resistant alloys.
As a super duplex stainless steel, Ferralium is supplied in hot, worked and annealed condition, It offers the potential to reduce section size and therefore the overall weight and cost. As well as this, Ferralium offers excellent corrosion resistance in a huge variety of corrosive applications, including dealing with corrosive chemicals including sulphuric, nitric and phosphoric acid.
Listed in NACE MR 01 75 for sour service, as well as being ASME Approved for Pressure Vessel applications, the alloy is tested to the absolute highest degree. This rigorous testing ensures that the product possesses high structural integrity, the correct phase balance, and the absence of sigma phase in the alloy’s structure.
Ferralium has a number of positives, making it one of the best alloys on the market today.
Originally developed in the 1960s, Ferralium ® pioneered the addition of nitrogen in the creation process – being the first creation of a super duplex stainless steel.
From then, it was continuously developed throughout the 1990s to extend its pitting resistance equivalent number and has been more recently worked with to increase mechanical properties.
Available as super duplex bars, plates, piping and fittings, with complementary weld wire, the alloy is particularly suitable for larger components as the formation of sigma phase is much less likely than it is in other super duplex grades.
With applications in the oil and gas industry, as well pollution control, marine use and water and sewage treatment, super duplex stainless steel is incredibly versatile and useful.
For over eighty years, Langley Alloys has provided our clients with a wide variety of durable, high-quality alloys. In 1969, we invented Ferralium and helped to launch the Super Duplex category of Stainless Steels. Today, we still manufacture this excellent product, as well as a range of other industry-leading products.
If you’d like to learn more about how Ferralium could be used in your application, then please do not hesitate to get in touch with our expert team. We can provide you with examples of how to use the alloy, as well as answer any questions you may have.
