This agitator, fabricated in 20mm hot rolled FERRALIUM 255 super duplex stainless steel by Turbo-Muller KG of Ottobrunn, near Munich, is one of seven for use in a phosphoric acid plant in Yugoslavia. Four are of 2.3 meters in diameter and each weigh 1 ton, and three other of 2.7 metres in diameter weigh 1.2 tons each.
Since phosphoric acid is extremely corrosive the high tensile carbon steel shafts of 200mm diameter on which the agitators are mounted are also encased in 3.2mm FERRALIUM (UNS S32550, Alloy 255, DIN 1.4507, ASTM F61) plate to give the same long-life potential as the agitators themselves in these tough conditions. The manufacture of phosphoric acid as part of the process in the production of fertilizers is of increasing importance in the fight to decrease the shortfall in the world food production.
