From our case study archives: After extensive testing for both pitting and crevice corrosion resistance in marine environments, Newport News Shipbuilding also selected Ferralium® 255-SD50 for key components of submarine retractable bow plane systems. Not only was the corrosion resistance important, but the alloy needed to achieve a minimum yield strength of 60ksi. Typically, Ferralium® 255-SD50 has a yield strength over 60 ksi at room temperature. The other equally important consideration was cost. The alloy successfully met all of these requirements.
