Comefor, from the Defence business unit of the WEARE Group, are a designer and manufacturer of critical mechanical systems, utilising a range of high-precision machining and additive manufacturing. Recent investment in the latest 5-axis machining centres complements turning, milling, grinding and LBM capabilities. They have more than 40 years’ experience of supplying challenging projects in a range of end-markets such as nuclear, oil and gas, aerospace and space, as well as large capital goods and power generation. However, some of their more interesting assignments have been in defence and naval applications where the choice of materials and requirements is often the most demanding.
Langley Alloys has supplied Ferralium® 255-SD50 to Comefor as 2 ¼” diameter bar, for the production of specialist fasteners for use in the assembly of the latest French submarines. Ferralium® was chosen specifically for its superior corrosion resistance, combined with higher mechanical properties than other super duplex stainless steels.
Langley Alloys has a history of supplying into naval applications, where the combination of high strength and high corrosion resistance is particularly suited for submarine production by a number of the world’s largest navies. Ferralium® 255 has been previously used in both propeller shafts and propellers, mechanical shaft seals and fasteners.
Similarly, Hiduron® 130 (and previously Marinel® 220) are also widely specified as submarine dive plane shafts, drive bushes and bearings, sonar equipment, and tow and winch components. Our unique copper alloys also provide excellent resistance to galling and bio-fouling, as well as avoiding the effects of hydrogen embrittlement.
