254SMO vs Super Duplex stainless steels
Super austenitic stainless steels, such as Alloy 254 are a significant step up from regular austenitic grades such as Alloy 304 and Alloy 316. The chromium and nickel contents are increased, together with >6% molybdenum, in order to achieve a pitting resistance equivalent number (PREN) of 43 or greater. However, as an austenitic stainless steel, they still retain excellent impact toughness at low temperatures and ease of fabrication.
Super duplex stainless steels have comparable corrosion resistance, but greater strength and lower costs. Therefore, for most applications they would be a more effective choice. This is except where the operating temperatures preclude their specification; either where low temperature impact toughness is required (<-50degC) or for long-term service at higher temperatures (>250degC).
