There is a considerable improvement in the mechanical and physical properties of super duplex stainless steel vs 316. Alloy 316 is perhaps the most widely used austenitic stainless steel, and for sugar cane processing, mixers and centrifuges are all well-served with Ferralium 255.
Water Treatment – Applications such as sewage treatment, desalination and swimming pools all employ super duplex stainless steels to resist the threat of corrosion from seawater, contaminated or brackish solutions
Here are some of the common applications for Alloy 316L –

However, for more demanding applications, there is a choice of alternative stainless steels.
For most applications with an operating temperature range of -50degC to 250degC, super duplex stainless steels provide a cost-effective option. Their yield strength is typically 3-4x greater than Alloy 316. In addition, their pitting resistance equivalent number (PREN) is >40 compared with 25, providing far better corrosion performance. Alloy 316 can be used for lesser marine environments, whilst super duplex stainless steels are recommended for long-term immersion in seawater.
